Dear Members,
It is with profound sadness that we learned of the passing of Dr. Joan E. Lynaugh , one of the true pioneers of nursing history and a scholar whose work profoundly shaped our field.
Joan Lynaugh dedicated her career to demonstrating that the history of nursing is essential to understanding healthcare, professional identity, and the broader social and cultural history of medicine. Through her visionary scholarship, her leadership, and her unwavering commitment to historical inquiry, she helped establish nursing history as a respected academic discipline and inspired generations of researchers around the world.
As the founding director of the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing, she created a lasting legacy that continues to support scholarship, collaboration, and the preservation of our profession’s historical heritage. Her publications, mentorship, and international engagement enriched not only the study of nursing history but also the community of historians who have had the privilege to learn from and work with her.
Many members of our Association were fortunate to know Joan personally, to meet her at conferences, or to be influenced by her generous encouragement and intellectual curiosity. Her kindness, wisdom, and enthusiasm will be remembered alongside her remarkable academic achievements.
Joan’s legacy will endure through the scholarship she inspired, the institutions she helped build, and the countless historians of nursing who continue to follow the path she helped create.
She will be greatly missed.
