The American Association for the History of Nursing (AAHN) is pleased to announce the call for abstracts for the 43rd Annual Nursing and Healthcare History Conference. This prestigious event will be held in Buffalo, NY, from June 3-7, 2026, as a joint meeting with the American Association for the History of Medicine (AAHM). This collaboration offers a unique opportunity for scholars and practitioners to engage in a multidisciplinary dialogue on the evolution of medical care and nursing practice.

Abstract Submission Tracks

The AAHN invites researchers, educators, and historians to submit their work under one of three distinct tracks. Please ensure your proposal aligns with the specific criteria of your chosen category:

  • Track 1: Original Research: Focuses on completed work utilizing historical methodology. Topics may include nursing and healthcare history across any region or period, as well as intersections with technology, race, gender studies, and economic history.
  • Track 2: Teaching Nursing and Healthcare History: Dedicated to educational scholarship. Submissions should describe the planning, implementation, and evaluation of courses, modules, or specific teaching activities related to healthcare history.
  • Track 3: Thematic Proposals: These 60-minute sessions address broad interest topics such as new historiography themes, research methods, or advocacy. Multidimensional perspectives with multiple speakers are encouraged.

Submission Guidelines and Deadlines

To ensure a fair and unbiased review, all submissions must be blinded; please omit all names of authors or organizations within the title and body of the abstract.

  • Final Deadline: The submission portal closes on Monday, December 1, 2025 (Extended from November 17).
  • Word Limit: 500 words or less (excluding references and learning objectives).
  • Format: Abstracts must include Purpose/Background, Methods/Design, Results/Outcomes, and Conclusions/Implications.
  • References: Use the Chicago Manual of Style, 18th Edition for all footnoted references.

Presentation Formats and Requirements

Accepted presenters can share their findings through various formats:

  • Podium Presentations: A 20-minute talk followed by a 10-minute Q&A.
  • Poster Presentations: Visual displays following AAHN guidelines, with presenters available for discussion during designated times.
  • Panel Presentations: A 60-minute session featuring 3-5 persons addressing a common theme.

Important Note for Presenters: All presenters must be AAHN members in good standing, register for the conference, and cover their own travel and accommodation costs.
