Significance of Race and Place: Historical Examination of Equity & Belonging in Nursing & HealthcareOctober 16-18, 2025 – Wilmington, NC

The American Association for the History of Nursing (AAHN) invites abstract submissions for the 42nd Annual Conference on the History of Nursing and Healthcare, to be held in Wilmington, NC, from October 16-18, 2025. AAHN offers three different abstract submission tracks:
- Original Research
- Teaching Nursing and Healthcare History
- Thematic Proposals
Submissions must align with one of these three categories and specify the preferred presentation format: poster, podium presentation, or panel.
The Call for Abstracts opens on December 2, 2024, and closes on February 28, 2025. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance status by April 4, 2025.
Conference Themes and Research Tracks
Wilmington, NC, the host city, has a complex racial history. AAHN encourages submissions of research and educational innovations that examine the historical significance of race and place in nursing and healthcare, with a particular focus on practice, education, and policy.
H2: Call for Papers for AAHN 2025 Conference
AAHN invites the academic community to submit contributions in the following areas:
H3: Original Research on Nursing History
AAHN welcomes abstracts of original research employing historical methodologies to analyze events, issues, and themes in nursing and healthcare history. Research on any historical period or geographical region is welcome, as well as interdisciplinary studies covering topics such as women’s labor, healthcare technology, economic history, racial and gender studies.
H3: Teaching Nursing and Healthcare History
Building on the success of the 40th Annual Conference’s pre-conference session, AAHN welcomes submissions related to teaching nursing and healthcare history. Abstracts may describe an entire course, a specific module, a learning activity, or a seminar, provided they include details on:
- Planning of the activity
- Implementation of historical content
- Assessment of learning outcomes
H3: Thematic Proposals and New Historiographical Perspectives
This category does not focus on new research but rather on exploring new historiographical themes, research methods, or perspectives on teaching and advocacy in nursing history. Presentations, limited to 60 minutes, may include multiple speakers to offer a multidimensional perspective on the topic.
Abstract Submission Guidelines
Abstracts must be submitted by February 28, 2025, via the Oxford Abstracts submission portal. Participants must select one of the three tracks and specify their preferred presentation format (poster, podium presentation, or panel).
Abstracts should be a maximum of 500 words (excluding notes and references) and must be blinded to ensure an impartial review process. A complete submission must include:
- Abstract Body structured as follows:
- Purpose and Background: Introduction to the topic, historical significance, and relevant literature
- Methods / Course Design / Implementation Plan
- Results / Learning Outcomes
- Conclusions and Future Implications
- References formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style (18th edition)
- Learning Objectives (1 to 3), using clear action verbs aligned with the abstract text
