DESCRIPTION:The In/Out: Histories of Health and Healthcare Conference 2026 is set to be a significant academic event\, challenging scholars to examine the structural\, material\, emotional\, and psychological boundaries that have shaped the history of health and healthcare from antiquity to the present day. Hosted at the University of Leeds from 30 June to 3 July 2026\, this international conference asks fundamental questions about what it means to be ‘in good health’ and how individuals have historically navigated the gateways\, routes\, breaks\, and barriers of medical systems. \n\n\n\nExploring the Boundaries of Care\n\n\n\nAs healthcare systems globally face mounting pressure in terms of capacity\, cost\, and capabilities\, the ‘In/Out’ theme offers a critical lens. This concept helps us understand the impact of different forms of access—or lack thereof—on people’s experiences of health\, disability\, illness\, and medical care in the past. \n\n\n\nThe conference particularly seeks to reveal the experiences of those who were out of the formal healthcare system. This includes individuals who could not\, or chose not to\, access care\, or whose access was partial\, delayed\, interrupted\, or contingent. By doing so\, the event aims to uncover the associated legacies of harm that can accompany such care inequalities. \n\n\n\nFurthermore\, ‘In/Out’ applies to medical practitioners themselves. Whether inside or outside formal care settings\, givers and receivers of healthcare have historically entered and exited practice\, offering a unique perspective on their own professional and personal experiences. \n\n\n\nCall for Proposals: Themes and Submission Details\n\n\n\nTaking a broad definition of both ‘in’ and ‘out\,’ proposals are invited from scholars considering experiences of being in and/or out of health or health care in any period or geographical location. DESCRIPTION:The European Journal for Nursing History and Ethics (ENHE) is pleased to announce a Call for Papers for its upcoming 9/2027 issue. As an interdisciplinary\, peer-reviewed Open Access e-Journal\, ENHE serves as a vital platform for scholarly exchange across the humanities\, nursing science\, social sciences\, and cultural studies. The 2027 theme\, “Narrating Nursing: Methods and Sources in Nursing History and Ethics\,” invites contributors to explore the micro-level of nursing through the lens of individual experiences and qualitative research. \n\n\n\nThe 2027 Theme: Narrating Nursing\n\n\n\nThis issue focuses on how diaries\, letters\, and personal artifacts—often referred to as “ego-documents”—illuminate the everyday realities of care. These sources provide a unique perspective on the lived experiences of nurses that often remain invisible in official institutional or policy documents. \n\n\n\nThe journal encourages submissions that: \n\n\n\n\nForeground the historical value of individual experiences.\n\n\n\nAnalyze the roles of individual theorists\, leaders\, or reformers\, moving beyond traditional “great pioneer” narratives.\n\n\n\nSituate individual actors within their specific social\, cultural\, and professional contexts.\n\n\n\nUtilize qualitative methods\, such as interviews and reflective diaries\, to examine nursing ethical practice and moral perspectives.\n\n\n\n\nInterdisciplinary Dialogue: History and Ethics\n\n\n\nA defining feature of the journal is the creation of a dialogue between nursing history and ethics. While the linking of these dimensions is not a strict prerequisite for publication\, it is highly encouraged. Hosted at the prestigious Institución Milà i Fontanals de Investigación en Humanidades (IMF-CSIC)\, this two-day scientific meeting aims to explore the multifaceted evolution of humanitarian action during a century of global transformations. \n\n\n\nExploring the Intersections of Relief and Medicine\n\n\n\nUntil the mid-20th century\, humanitarian action found its most prominent settings within the context of wars and subsequent post-war periods. This conference focuses on how transnational humanitarianism\, gender and health intersected to shape modern relief efforts. Medical and health innovations—ranging from technological and practical advancements to conceptual and professional shifts—emerged and circulated globally during these periods of crisis\, becoming a central pillar of international humanitarianism. \n\n\n\nThe Central Role of Gender in Humanitarian Action\n\n\n\nA key thematic line of the event is the role of women as pivotal actors in relief and health initiatives.
